 Unity of Fredericksburg, First Saturday of every month at 11:30am

UMW Sustainability is SO excited to be partnering with the Fredericksburg Food Cooperative and Unity of Fredericksburg to bring the community a local place to learn about different sustainable topics while enjoying great company and a plant based potluck! If you can’t bring a plant based dish, please bring a small donation. Donations will be going to Unity of Fredericksburg for allowing us to host these events at their facility. Spring is right around the corner and you know what that means… RIVER CLEAN UPS!! UMW Sustainability is working to organize a group of students to participate in these upcoming Friends of the Rappahannock clean ups and hopefully provide a carpool option for students to get there and reduce our carbon footprint. Butts are Litter Too Downtown Clean Up


Saturday, Nov 16th @ 10:00am Jay’s Bar & Grill 

Come get involved and clean up cigarette butts downtown! Gloves, litter grabbers and bags to collect your butts will be provided. There will also be FREE coffee provided by Katora so please BYOC (bring your own cup) to help reduce waste and enjoy your warm coffee!




‘Living the Change’ Outdoor Screening


Friday, Oct 25th @ 6:30pm on Ball Circle 

Join UMW Sustainability, EcoClub and UMW Fair Trade Campaign in an outdoor screening of the inspiring documentary on the future of sustainability, FREE hot chocolate (BYOM bring your own mug), FREE popcorn and a FREE fair trade raffle donated by Latitudes Fredericksburg! Environmental Candidate Forum

UMW’s President’s Council on Sustainability is co-sponsoring the Environmental Candidate Forum

October 16th from 7-9pm in Chandler Ballroom C

This event is nonpartisan and is being held to give voters an opportunity to hear candidates discuss key environment, conservation,
sustainability, and development issues from around the Fredericksburg, Stafford, and Spotsylvania areas.

As a certified Tree Campus USA, UMW is proud and passionate about meeting our goals of having an established, sustained and healthy community forest on campus. So come on out and help us celebrate our amazing trees and all they provide for the world’s ecosystems, vitality and health!

Plogging With President Paino

September 4th, 2019 at 7am – Meet @ Bell Tower

Participate in the UMW tradition of a morning jog with President Paino on campus and around the canal, with an environmental twist! “Plogging” is the act of picking up litter while jogging or walking. At the end of the plog, the person who weighs in with the most litter collected will wine a prize 🎉Come with your active wear & we will provide the gloves & bags!

Backyard Composting 101 with Jonathan Stevens



Thursday, August 15th 7-8pm @ 1202 Caroline St, Fredericksburg 

Want to compost but don’t know how to get started? This is the session for you! Come with your questions. Jonathan Stevens, a lifelong composter & Master Gardener volunteer, will provide specific hands-on advice on how you can do backyard composting. Even if you don’t have space for a compost bin, Jonathan will show you how. Help the environment 🌎 while enriching your soil.👍

Summer Shred Event

July 25th @ the UMW Physical Plant

Recycling is an essential component of UMW’s commitment to sustainability so on July 25th, UMW Sustainability and UMW Landscape & Grounds hosted a shred event where ALL documents shredded were recycled. Departments, faculty & staff all over UMW participate in the event for a great turnout!



How to become a Climate Advocate & Lobby

At the training, you will…

  • Draw inspiration and lessons from your own life experiences that will help you advocate more effectively.
  • Learn about federal climate policy and how to cut greenhouse gas pollution in an equitable and economically-friendly way.
  • Explore different types of actions you can take to build political support for climate policy.
  • Learn how to write a letter to the editor that brings attention to climate change issues in the newspaper.
  • Experience what it is like to conduct a lobby meeting with a member of Congress.
