Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFL’s)
CFL’s must be kept out of the trash! They contain mercury, and must be properly recycled. Mary Washington is currently working on a recycling program for these bulbs, but in the meantime, they can be disposed of in several safe ways:
-All Home Depot stores collect CFL’s for recycling free of charge. Our nearest on is at 1201 Gateway Blvd.
-Order a kit from Waste Management which allows you to mail your bulbs to a recycling facility.

Broken fluorescent bulbs
A broken CFL or fluorescent tube can be a danger to your health, and should be handled with care. Here is information on how to safely dispose of one of these broken bulbs. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, contact either Facilities Services (654-1047), or the Campus Police (654-1025).
