DOT Campaign

What is the DOT campaign?

The DOT campaign is designed to make the world a better place – socially, culturally, economically, and environmentally – by empowering student groups and individuals to take action towards sustainability and sustainable programming.  The campaign stems from the idea that small steps can have big impacts.  When an entire community commits to personal sustainability practices, change is possible.

Why is UMW engaging in the DOT campaign?

UMW is dedicated to sustainable practices that ensure our critical activities are socially just, economically viable, environmentally sound, and culturally founded – and that they continue to be so for future generations.  The DOT campaign can act as a vehicle for educational learning experiences, regional engagement, community service, and personal actions that help strengthen not only the UMW community, but also the Fredericksburg area and, ultimately, the world.

How can you get involved?

Decide to become DOT Endorsed, and look out for DOT Endorsed Programming!  Encourage your clubs and organizations to offer DOT Endorsed Events. Select a few sustainability practices that combine your passion with your daily routine.  Join others who have committed to donate time or money to Rappahannock Group of the Sierra Club or Friends of the Rappahannock, participate in a president’s council on sustainability Action Goal, support a cultural event on campus, volunteer with COAR, or recycle.

How is UMW engaging in the DOT campaign?

There is now a DOT checklist on the OrgSync Event Form for clubs and organizations to use as a guide toward sustainable programming/event planning. It is divided into four sections (economic, cultural, social, and environmental DOTS), and each section has available points ranging from one to three. Each of these checkboxes are examples of sustainable practices to think about trying to execute at an event. If 12 points worth is checked off (and actually accomplished at the event), then the event is DOT Endorsed! The club/event will receive a DOT Endorsed Banner to display, so everyone who attends knows the club/organization put in a real effort to offer sustainable programming to the university.
